EU&U Democracy Festival

We were thrilled to host the EU&U Democracy Festival — a special two-day event dedicated to reimagining democratic participation and protecting our freedoms.

Across Europe and beyond, democracy has been under pressure. Political spaces have been shrinking, fundamental rights challenged, and many citizens have felt disconnected from decision-making processes. More than ever, we needed fresh ways to engage, foster solidarity, and ensure fundamental rights remained at the centre of the European project.

Day 1: Beyond the Bubble — Rethinking Political Spaces
Participants discovered how to bring political engagement into unexpected places — from art venues to sports clubs and local communities — making activism more accessible and empowering for all. The day also featured special prizes from Fides Film Festival.

Day 2: Democracy Under Pressure — Learning from LGBTIQ Rights Activists
In honour of Brussels Pride, attendees learned directly from LGBTIQ rights activists about strategies to organise, resist democratic backsliding, and protect human rights even in challenging environments.

When: Wednesday 14 & Thursday 15 May 2025, starting at 18:30 CEST on both days
Where: JEF Europe Headquarters (Rue des Deux Églises 14, 1000 Bruxelles)

Each day offered inspiring insights from civil society workers and activists, along with hands-on workshops to help transform ideas into concrete action plans. Drinks and snacks kept everyone energised throughout the evening.

A summary of the event can now be found on LinkedIn.
